Electrification of Heavy Transport in New Zealand

Research in energy explores sustainable, reliable and cost-effective energy systems. Collaboration with New Zealand and international stakeholders connects academic research activities with industrial needs in the development of impactful innovation and low/zero-carbon technology.

This $12.5 million MBIE-funded project involves the development of a cryogenic cooling system for the stator and rotor of a fully-superconductive 3 MW electric aeroplane motor. As New Zealand’s only academic cryocooler research institution, THERA will focus on the development of a thermoacoustic cryocooler that operates on sound waves without requiring any moving parts.
